Why We Think Self-Love Is the Most Important Ritual of All
There is always something waiting to be done.
Another message to answer.
Another responsibility to carry.
Another thing that could be better, faster, finished.
Somewhere between all of it, we can become very good at caring for everything except ourselves.
At Maison Ormès, we believe self-love begins much more quietly.
It can be a candle lit at the end of a long day.
A room made softer before you settle into it.
Ten minutes without a screen.
A morning that begins slowly, simply because you decided it could.
None of these things are extravagant.
They are small reminders that your own wellbeing deserves a place in your day.
Self-love is often spoken about as something grand and also selfish - a retreat, a reward, a complete change of life, saying no more often, recognizing your boundaries, appreciating yourself.
But perhaps it can be much smaller than that.
Perhaps self-love is simply choosing yourself in the little moments, without needing to justify it.
Resting without feeling guilty.
Making time for something that brings you peace.
Sitting quietly with your thoughts.
Lighting a candle simply because you want to, not because there is an occasion for it.
It does not always have to be a grand gesture.
Sometimes, it is simply a pause.
We spend so much of our lives showing up for other people - remembering what they need, making space for them, celebrating their moments, carrying responsibilities and meeting expectations.
And somewhere in all of that, it can become surprisingly easy to forget to show up for ourselves.
But loving yourself is not selfish.
It does not mean caring less for the people around you. It does not mean becoming indifferent to their needs. It simply means remembering that YOU belong on your own list, too.
Your rest matters.
Your quiet matters.
Your happiness matters.
The things that bring you peace do not always need to be productive, useful or justified.
There is something beautiful about creating small rituals that belong only to you. A familiar fragrance at the end of a long day. A few quiet minutes in a room lit only by candlelight. A favourite book. Music playing softly in the background. Sitting with your thoughts before the world asks anything more of you.
These moments may seem insignificant.
But perhaps that is precisely why they matter.
Self-love does not always announce itself. It can be quiet. Almost invisible.
It can be the decision to slow down.
To listen to yourself.
To give yourself the same patience you so naturally give to others.
To stop treating rest as something that must be earned.
And, sometimes, it is simply the quiet decision not to abandon yourself in the process of showing up for everyone else.
At Maison Ormès, we believe rituals do not have to be elaborate to be meaningful.
Sometimes, all they need to do is remind you to come back to yourself.
A little time. A little stillness. A moment that is entirely your own.
Perhaps that is self-love, after all.
